Top 10 Wardrobe Updates for A/W 2016
By Janet Reeder
You can’t fail to notice the new looks that are arriving in the shops (what in media speak is called a ‘high street fashion drop’ BTW). But if scouring magazine images of models stalking the catwalk in velvet thigh length boots isn’t inspiring your autumn wardrobe update, here is my pick of the key pieces out there that can update your look in an instant.
The blocky heel is not only easy to wear it is sooo on trend. It can be low or high and maybe in dramatic contrast to the rest of the boot and shoe like the one pictured here from M&S Collection, £29.50.
Time to make a statement. Instead of playing safe with black or brown, why not shop for animal prints, white or metallic ankle boots? If you’ve been blessed with the legs of a thoroughbred, the v striking thigh length style in suede. I adore this snakeskin boot, £39 at Debenhams.
For day it’s the cross-body or tote bag – the oversized handbag you’d carry in the crook of your arm is over. Free your arms for something else – wearing lots of jangly bangles for example! For night it’s got to be either sparkly or a heavily embellished little number in a Dolce & Gabbana style. This Trinker charm X body bag by Accessorize is a fabulous example, £32.
The colour of the season is red. It’s everywhere, but you don’t have to wear it that way. A scarlet shoe or lippy will really be enough.
Wide legs and flares are both the style du jour. Wear these cropped so you are showing plenty of ankle boot (see above). But don’t worry if you can’t pull this off, just stick with a shape that suits. Flares, £28, Evans.
A fashion fave of the season is the pleated midi. It’s been around for a while but there’s something about it that can add a quirky twist to your look. Not the easiest thing to carry off without some height though, so why not this stunning fringed skirt from Next, £48? It’s a brilliant party wear staple that you’ll wear forever.
On my ‘to buy’ list is a tweed coat, preferably with a dramatic faux fur collar that will brighten up winter days no end. Moschino have done this style mixed up with patterned blouses and sandals with socks but that’s fashion darling! You can’t have too many coats. It’s dreary having to wear the same one all through winter. Buy now then get another in the sales to perk you up while waiting for spring.
Either dark and vampy or sparkly. The advantage of sparkly is that if you chip your nails it won’t show up as much! So sparkly it is then!
To match the mood of the moment it just has to be red. You can afford to experiment with lippy like this S Pro Colour Lipstick Hollywood Red £3 at Primark.
Frills around the neckline may make you look like a Coronation Street barmaid or Elizabeth I. If in doubt, opt for the ruffly bit in an unexpected place. I love this dress from River Island, £50 partly because of the ruffle and partly because it looks like you’d have so much fun once you’re in it!
Even if you do only one thing, wear it with style and cut a dash this autumn – confidence is the ultimate must-have piece this season, oh and of course and having fun at the shops. It is after all, only fashion!
